A gap year between High School and college. Good Idea?

Author: admin  //  Category: wiki college

I graduate from college soon and have been thinking of taking a gap year. I'd like to become a video game journalist (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video_game_journalism - here's a link if you don't know what that is) and from the research I've done on that, my best course of action would be to get an internship. I was thinking that if I took a gap year, I could get a job at a local grocery store, try and get an internship for journalism, and maybe take a sewing class. My mom seems to think this is a terrible idea, so I thought I would get some more opinions before making my decision.

Looks like your convenient idea.
At the end of one year of gap from schooling nothing left and you may have to start from the scratch.
Your are neither here nor there.
Do not break.Good luck.

i heard if u do wait that u will hold off on going back after a year's time. but i think im gonna wait a year. it gives you time to chill, save up some cash, sort out your life, your plans, etc.

Gap Years are good ideas ONLY if you can use that year to do something productive that will improve your resume. Working at a Grocery store won't do it. (and the salary you earn will effect your ability to get student loans) A year volunteering (peacecorps or americorps) is a common, and good Gap Year experience. Some people can do an internship, but most internships require you to be actively enrolled in college, and are for credit. If you do an internship, it should be in Video Games or Journalism, and personally, I'd wait until you finish 2 years of your college before doing one, that way if you change your mind about majors before then, you can adjust your Gap experience accordingly.

Honestly, at my school most of us take a gap year before going to college/university. Our teachers encourage it!
But with us, what most of us will do is come back to high school for a semester after graduation (Sept-Jan) just to take a couple extra classes to make our GPA higher when applying to school. Then we take Feb-September off to work and just chill out, travel, etc.
This is very popular at my school..we're called "Post-Grads". I did it this past year and it was an amazing year. SO much better than stressful grade 12. Plus, teachers are awesome with us because we've already graduated. They're a lot more chill. And then once we're done and ahve the time off, the freedom is amazing!!

I highly suggest taking an oppurtunity to have a year off! It's such a great time, and despite what people thing, it won't make you not want to go back to school. You'll be ready to go back after a year or half a year off, believe me (I'm SO ready to go to college in September).

I hope I helped ! And I hope you have a good year doing whatever you choose to do !

The problem is that it is very easy to lose motivation to go back to school once you have left and gotten busy with everyday life. The discipline it takes to go to class and do homework that seems pointless to your career objectives is harder to muster once you've been out of the routine.

Well i was thinking of that myself so my answer is that a gap year is good idea. You can get some cash for college anyway, you'll also "relax" from the High School and you'll be fresh and cool, ready for some serious studying again :D
    Cheers! :D

Trust me….Keep going! I'm in the same boat as you..(I grad in December) but I weighed all my options and decided to keep going….Taking a break does nothing but prolong things! I've talked to people who have taken the Gap and those who haven't and every single person..told me to keep going! I would love to do some of the things I really want to do but I figure after I finish grad school….I'll have all the time in the world to make money and complete some personal goals! Think about it….Grad is a year - 2 years depending on the program….It's worth going through all the way till you get whatever degree you want (Master, PH.D or double PH.D)

I'm in the same position but…I'm going to grad anyway!
