Made for $30,000 by two young filmmakers from Florida, THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT wowed festival audiences for several months before finding distribution at the 1999 Sundance Festival. It is an ingenious creation which makes effective use of its lack of budget and cast of unknowns. The film is composed entirely of reportedly “found” footage shot by three missing college students who made a journey to the woods of Western Maryland in 1994 with the purpose of making a documentary about a “witch” of local legend who is linked to murders and mysterious occurrences spanning 200 years. It begins with footage of the crew leaving their homes and testing their equipment, but before we know it, they are lost deep in the endless woods, with the voices of screaming children piercing the blackness from off in the distance. Things get worse from there. The experience is disorienting and frightening as well as the most rewarding horror film experience to come along in many years, as it wisely chooses to prey on our vulnerable imaginations rather than bombard us with graphic images.

After completing a degree in communications at Boston College,[3] Kingston made his professional debut in 2005.[4] He competed primarily in the New England area, including stints in the Millennium Wrestling Federation, New England Championship Wrestling, the Eastern Wrestling Alliance, and Chaotic Wrestling under the ring name Kofi Nahaje Kingston.[1][5]

In September 2006, he signed a developmental contract with World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), and was assigned to Deep South Wrestling (DSW), a Georgia based developmental territory.[1] He debuted in the new company, using the same ring name, in a dark match loss to Montel Vontavious Porter on September 21.[6] For the rest of 2006 and the beginning of 2007 he appeared in DSW, as well as its Kentucky based sister promotion Ohio Valley Wrestling, where he was placed into a tag team dubbed the Commonwealth Connection with Harry Smith.[7][8][9]

2007 was also his first exposure to the main WWE roster, when he worked dark matches on March 5 and 26 before episodes of WWE Raw against Charlie Haas and Trevor Murdoch respectively. For these appearances he used the ring name Kofi Jamaica.[10][11] When he returned to the developmental territories he shortened his original ring name to Kofi Kingston, and continued to use both ring names throughout his duration there.[1] That May he also worked house shows, defeating Shelton Benjamin in Greenville, South Carolina on the 5th,[12] and Val Venis in Roanoke, Virginia on the 6th.[13]

When Florida based developmental territory Florida Championship Wrestling opened in June, Kingston was relocated there, appearing at their first show on June 26 teaming with Eric Perez against Keith Walker and Ryklon Stephens in a losing effort.[14] Kingston worked there for most of the remainder of the year,[14][15] until he was called up to the main WWE roster.

A series of vignettes for Kingston’s television debut began airing on the weekly ECW television show starting on December 6, 2007.[16] view During this introduction phase the videos, official WWE website, and the ECW commentators all made note that he would be the first Jamaican-born person to wrestle for the company. He debuted on January 22, 2008 with a win over local wrestler David Owens.[17][18] After wrestling sporadic matches, Kingston was involved in his first major match; a 24-man Battle royal match that took place before Wrestlemania XXIV, where the winner would have received a ECW Championship match, but he was eliminated by Mark Henry.[19]

The story revolves around three soldiers — Collee (Rachel McAdams), T.K. (Michael Pena) and Cheever (Tim Robbins) — who return from the Iraq War after suffering injuries and learn that life has moved on without them. They end up on an unexpected road trip across the U.S., with Collee on a mission to bring her boyfriend’s guitar back to his family because he saved her life, T.K. seeking confidence to face his wife after a shrapnel injury that threatens his sexual function and middle-aged Cheever planning to hit the casinos in a desperate effort to pay for his son’s college tuition.

The film was scheduled to begin shooting in May, 2007 with a budget of under $20 million, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

According to an Associated Press story (Tim Robbins jams with local Illinois band, published on msnbc.msnc.com on June 8, 2007), star Tim Robbins made an unannounced appearance at a bar in Edwardsville, Illinois after shooting in the town that day, performing on guitar with a local band. Edwardsville’s Main Street passes for Denver’s Larimer Square in the film, according to a Belleville Press-Democrat story published June 7, 2007.
